Start With the Art: A Collector’s Guide to Creating a Home You Love

When people decorate a room, art is often the last thing they think about.

The sofa is chosen. The rug is down. The walls are painted. The lighting is installed. And then comes the question: What should we put on the walls?

I’d like to suggest another way.

Start with the art.

Choose a painting because it makes you feel something. Because you keep coming back to it. Because the colors energize you, calm you, remind you of a place, or simply make you happy.

Then let the room grow around it.

Decorating vs. Collecting

There is a difference between buying something to fill a wall and collecting artwork you genuinely want to live with.

I often think about it this way:

Decorating asks what belongs in the room. Collecting asks what belongs in your life.

Original art doesn't have to perfectly match your sofa or curtains. In fact, some of the most interesting rooms aren't perfectly coordinated at all.

They feel collected.

They contain objects, artwork, books, furniture, photographs, and memories that reveal something about the people who live there.

Choose the Feeling First

Before thinking about size or color, ask yourself:

How do I want to feel when I walk into this room?

Calm? Energized? Curious? Joyful? Grounded?

This is one of the reasons I work so intensely with color, movement, light, and nature in my paintings. I'm interested in the emotional experience of a painting — what happens when you live with it and encounter it every day.

A painting isn't static simply because it hangs on a wall. Morning light changes it. Evening light changes it. Your own experiences change the way you see it.

Over time, it becomes familiar while continuing to reveal something new.

Your Home Doesn't Need to Look Like Everyone Else's

We see beautifully styled interiors constantly now. It can be tempting to recreate them.

But your home doesn't need to look like a photograph in a catalog.

It should look like you.

Original artwork is one of the easiest ways to make a space deeply personal because no one else has that exact painting or your particular relationship with it.

You don't need to understand everything about contemporary art to collect it.

You simply need to pay attention to what draws you in.

Buy Art You Want to Live With

When you find yourself returning to a painting again and again, pay attention.

That response matters.

Original artwork can remain in a family far longer than a sofa, rug, or paint color. It moves from room to room and sometimes from home to home. Eventually, it becomes connected to the memories made around it.

A painting purchased today can become part of your family's visual history.

That is what makes collecting different from decorating.

So if you're beginning a room — or simply looking at an empty wall — try turning the process around.

Don't ask:

What matches this room?

Ask:

What do I want to live with?

Start there.

Start with the art.
