Art Is VITAL: Why Art Matters to Our Wellbeing
We are living in a time of enormous noise.
News arrives constantly. Our phones rarely stop. Anxiety, uncertainty, responsibilities, and information follow us into the places where we are supposed to rest.
That has made me think more deeply about something I have believed for a long time:
Art isn't a luxury. Art is VITAL.
Art can give us a moment to stop.
To look.
To breathe.
To feel.
What We Surround Ourselves With Matters
Our homes aren't simply containers for our belongings.
They are the environments where we begin and end our days. They hold dinners, conversations, celebrations, grief, ordinary Tuesday mornings, children growing up, friendships, and memories.
What we choose to surround ourselves with affects how those spaces feel.
Color can energize us.
A landscape can transport us.
A line can create movement.
A painting can remind us of a person, a place, or a feeling we don't want to lose.
One collector described what happens when she sees one of my paintings hanging in her foyer:
“Each time I see it, I smile. This beautiful painting has a calming effect on me.”
I love that.
Not because a painting can solve everything happening outside our doors — it can't.
But it can change a moment.
And our lives are made from moments.
Art Creates Space for Feeling
I paint largely from memory and emotion.
Mountains I've walked through. Skies I've watched. Trails. Water. Flowers. Light. Color combinations that stay with me long after I've left a place.
I'm not necessarily interested in reproducing exactly what I saw.
I'm interested in remembering what it felt like to be there.
When someone else connects with that painting, something wonderful happens. My memory begins to become part of their experience.
The painting takes on a new life.
Art Becomes Part of Our Stories
Another collector once told me that having my artwork in her home reminds her of the creative journey we have shared and the impact art has had on her life.
That is one of the things I find most meaningful about original artwork.
It accumulates stories.
You remember where you found it.
Why you chose it.
Where it first hung.
Perhaps your children grow up seeing it every day.
Years later, it may move into another room — or another generation's home.
Original paintings become part of a home and a family history. They can carry memories from one generation to the next.
Art Is VITAL
I want to talk more about art this way.
Not simply as decoration.
Not as something reserved for museums, galleries, or people who already consider themselves collectors.
But as something deeply human.
Art can bring beauty into difficult periods.
It can create quiet in a busy space.
It can help us remember.
It can make us curious.
It can connect us with another person's experience.
And sometimes it can simply make us smile when we walk through the front door.
That matters.
Art is VITAL to our homes, our communities, and our wellbeing.
And perhaps right now, we need those moments of connection, beauty, and reflection more than ever.
Art Is VITAL is an ongoing project from artist Christina Chang exploring the relationship between original art, our environments, and wellbeing. Explore my available paintings and follow along as I continue sharing stories about the ways art becomes part of our lives.
